About the filmmaker

By Philip Clyde-Smith

Philip Clyde-Smith is an award-winning director whose work blends dark humour, naturalistic performances, and visually striking storytelling. After more than two decades directing commercials for international brands, he is now expanding into feature filmmaking with his dark comedy horror project A Hand to Hold. Philip’s directing style is rooted in authenticity and collaboration. Known for drawing honest, emotionally grounded performances from actors, children, and animals alike, he creates an environment where spontaneity and truth can emerge on screen. His background in editing gives him an instinctive understanding of rhythm and performance, shaping stories that feel both intimate and cinematic. A recurring theme in Philip’s work is the collision between the ordinary and the uncanny. He is particularly drawn to stories where the supernatural intrudes upon everyday life, revealing uncomfortable truths about human relationships, belief, and power. Humour often acts as the doorway into these darker ideas disarming audiences before leading them somewhere more unsettling. With A Hand to Hold, Philip brings these sensibilities into the world of genre filmmaking, blending dark comedy, body horror and emotional drama to explore the dynamics of love, control and letting go. Based in Jersey in the Channel Islands, Philip continues to direct commercials while developing a slate of feature projects that explore the strange edges of human experience.
