About the filmmaker
While completing a BA Hons Business Management degree at Queen Mary University of London, Junaid worked as part of a volunteer documentary film crew for Hackney-based charity WORLDWrite, receiving training in all aspects of documentary filmmaking including presenting, camera operating, sound recording, producing and directing. He went on to study Method Acting with Sam Rumbelow in the techniques of Lee Strasberg and Konstantin Stanislavski. For his dissertation on his BA Hons, Junaid wrote an in-depth study on the film ‘The Battle of Algiers’ directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, and the film remains one of the largest impacts on Junaid’s work. Upon graduating Junaid won a DaDA scholarship on the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts MA Acting Course. This 15-month course consisted of intensive training in Acting Technique, Voice and Movement for performance in theatre, radio and film. Upon graduating from Drama School Junaid was represented by Jeremy Conway at Conway van Gelder Grant and went on to perform on stage in ‘The President and the Pakistani’ directed by Tom Attenborough and in the feature film ‘Plan Bart’ for Caviar Films. Now making the move back to his passion of filmmaking, Junaid is the co-creator of the successful YouTube channel city hacks London with over 1,000,000 views since launch. Junaid has also launched the production company Brickwork Films, directing and producing their debut short film ‘New World’ for which he received a special mention at the Winchester Short Film Festival in their Rising Star Award category. Junaid animated and directed his debut music video Holy Now for the band Wasuremono, which has been published on the websites Promo News, Booooooom, Directors Notes and championed online by Hollywood director Ava DuVernay. As a director Junaid uses his unique experience from his entrepreneurial background, documentary filmmaking and the acting industry to create films that tell stories of those currently unrepresented on screen. He believes in deep exploration of character, maximizing time working with the actors to examine the characters’ needs and actions. He wishes to tell stories honestly and unbiased, with an endeavor to inspire an audience in the same way he has been from films that have profoundly affected him. Junaid has been privileged to work with many talented directors, learning first-hand from his experiences on both large-scale and intimate film sets.
