Filmmaker's Note

There is lots of coverage in the media about post traumatic stress disorder but what I wanted to explore in this short was the crazed emotions that overcome a young soldier before he goes over “there”. The fear of leaving those loved one behind, the fear of dying and of killing others. Matty in many ways was me.

We chose to shoot with a slight documentary feel because the story was emotional and real and I felt it complimented it. To achieve this Howard our DoP and I decided to use practical lights, only enhancing them with films lights. We also shot entirely handheld and quite often moved with our subject in shot to give a feel of immediacy.

The main thing for me after the script was in place was choosing the cast and being able to work on performance. It was a very fruitful experience working with Corey and Marie because they were apt at making suggestions which strengthened are collaboration and made their characters believable.
