Filmmaker's Note

Filmmaking isn't always about flashy cinematography or amazing technique...for me it's about finding a humanity or vulnerability in conflict (big or small) that brings us to new truths about characters but us as an audience.

In Ghost Nets I tried to make a film that seemed concurrently large and small in scale, that it was part of a journey and not the whole story.

I wanted it small in scale so it has a small tight knit cast, the character arcs are small personal stories. They are conversely big life defining stories personally for our characters and the setting of the dramatic landscape was an attempt to make them feel small and totally vulnerable to the wild, on the very edge of civilisation where anything can be said or done because it would all get swallowed up by the sea.

Walls come down as the absence of distraction and technology engender a more tribal and familial dependency for the characters...shared fires and food, hunting and gathering, group survival in it's most abstract form.

I also wanted to leave room left for it to grow and show that we only ever merely get glimpses into a story that never begins with the opening credits or ends with the last frame of video.
