Filmmaker's Note
Blue Train is my first narrative music video. I listened to the song a lot, went with a feeling, and finally came up with this story, that I don't think matches the lyrics exactly, but compliments them in a poetic way. The few people I've shown it to have said they didn't realise it was a music video, they thought it was a short film - I think that's a good thing, right? :)
The lead actors are a real life couple. I had them in mind from the start as I've worked with Monica before and I knew Tom was a good actor too. I think they looked great on-screen together, their chemistry brought something interesting to their performance. They were obviously very comfortable with each other, but the kissing scene was surprisingly awkward. Monica said it was like she was kissing someone else. I think it really worked.
It was a very small crew and, as with most of these projects, everyone worked on it for free and pulled in favours to make it happen.
The production was very rushed, which made it conveniently cheap. We used locations are very close together in Brixton, and managed to get them all for free. We shot chronologically, starting with the evening scenes (most of which were cut from the film), woke up early for the morning scenes, and then shot the final scene on the way back home on the train.
I didn’t hire a sound recordist and planned to ADR from the start. Every sound had to be recreated for the dialogue scenes, but most of which didn’t get used in the final film. The ADR was a bit distracting, and didn’t work as well as I’d hoped. It also really slowed down the post-production process, but this did give me time to search for the right colourist, whom I found on Vimeo and lives in Romania.
